Cannabis letter grading ladder from A to AAAA plus, next to Godfather Gas full size and popcorn pricing

Blog

Nobody regulates the letters. There is no board, no certification, no lab test that returns a grade. The shop selling you the flower is the one deciding whether it is AAA or AAAA, and that is the whole story behind AAA vs AAAA weed in Canada.

That does not make the scale useless. It makes it a seller’s shorthand rather than a measurement, and knowing which one you are reading changes how you shop.

Where the scale came from

The letter grades are a Canadian grey market convention. They spread through mail order dispensaries in the 2010s and never existed in the legal system at all. Walk into a provincial store and you will not see a single A on a label.

The ladder people use runs A, AA, AAA, AAAA, with AAAA sometimes written as quads. Past that you get AAAA+ and AAAAA, which exist purely because the top of a scale with no owner can always be extended.

What the letters are supposed to signal

Grade What it usually means Typical giveaway
A to AA Low shelf, often older or machine trimmed Loose structure, visible leaf, faint smell
AAA Solid everyday flower Decent density, tidy trim, honest nose
AAAA Top shelf, hand trimmed, well cured Dense, frosty, loud smell through the bag
AAAA+ and up Marketing No consistent meaning between shops

Read that table as a description of what sellers mean when they type the letters, not as a specification anyone is held to.

The part that breaks it

Two shops can buy from the same grower, receive the same flower from the same room, and list it at different grades. Both are telling the truth as they see it, because there is no definition to be wrong about.

The scale also drifts upward over time. If every listing on a site is AAAA, the grade has stopped carrying information and has become the default. A site with a genuine spread of grades is giving you more to work with than one where everything is top shelf.

Worth saying clearly: the letters are not a THC measurement. A well grown, well cured batch at 19 percent will smoke better than a badly cured batch at 26, and the grade is mostly describing the growing and curing rather than the number.

The four things actually being judged

Strip the letters away and graders are looking at four things.

Structure. Dense, properly formed buds that hold together. Airy or wispy flower usually means it was grown fast or finished under weak light.

Trim. Hand trimmed flower keeps its trichomes. Machine trimming is faster and knocks them off, which is why machine trimmed buds look rounded and slightly bald.

Cure. The slow, boring part that most of the difference actually lives in. A proper cure takes weeks. Rushed flower smokes harsh and tastes like hay no matter how good it looked.

Nose. Terpenes are volatile and they go first. Strong smell through a sealed bag is the single most reliable sign that flower was handled and stored properly.

Here is the catch. From a product photo you can assess structure and trim. You cannot assess cure or nose at all, and those are the two that decide whether you enjoy it. That is the real limit on buying by grade online.

Why we do not use the letters

We label flower with a Sticky Tier instead. Value and Premium, with the strain type next to it. The reason is simple: if we wrote AAAA on everything the way the rest of the market does, you would learn nothing from it.

Premium means hand trimmed and properly cured, with the density and smell to match. Godfather Gas 28G and Pink Rockstar 28G both sit there at $130 an ounce.

Value means solid flower that did not make the Premium cut, usually on structure or consistency rather than on cure. Grape Yogurt 28G is $99 and Golden Hour 28G is $95.

Two tiers that mean something beats five letters that do not.

The actual way to pay less for the same flower

If the question behind AAA vs AAAA is really “how do I get top shelf without paying top shelf”, the answer is not a lower letter. It is popcorn.

Popcorn is the smaller buds from the lower branches of the same plant, from the same room, cured the same way. Smaller because they got less light, not because they are worse. They break up the same and they smoke the same.

The gap is not small. Godfather Gas is $130 for the ounce. Godfather Gas Popcorn is $88 for the same flower in smaller pieces, which is about a third off for a difference you lose the moment you grind it. Grey God Popcorn goes down to $50.

Anyone rolling, grinding or using a dry herb vape is paying for bag appeal they are about to destroy. Buy the popcorn.

Judging it yourself

When it arrives, in this order:

  1. Open the bag and smell it before you look at it. If there is no smell, nothing else matters
  2. Squeeze a bud. It should give slightly and spring back. Crumbling means too dry, no give means too wet and heading for mould
  3. Break one open by hand. The inside should be as frosty as the outside
  4. Look at the trim. Tight and tidy is hand work, rounded and bald is machine
  5. Check the stem. A clean snap means dry enough to store. A bend means it needs air

That takes thirty seconds and tells you more than any grade on any listing.

Our flower is in cannabis, the smaller bud pricing is in popcorn, and if you are deciding on effect rather than grade, the indica, sativa and hybrid guide covers that side.
