What are cannabis terpenes?
Terpenes are volatile aromatic hydrocarbons produced in the same trichomes that produce THC and CBD. Cannabis is far from the only plant that makes them — myrcene is the dominant aroma compound in mangoes, limonene comes from citrus peels, pinene gives pine needles their smell. There are over 200 known cannabis terpenes, but a working knowledge of the top 15 covers roughly 95% of what you’ll actually encounter on a lab report.
Terpenes matter for three reasons: they determine the smell and taste of every strain, they modulate the effects of THC and CBD through what’s commonly called the entourage effect, and they’re a more reliable indicator of fresh, well-cured flower than cannabinoid percentage alone.
Where to find terpene data on your COA

Most Canadian licensed producers and craft growers now publish full terpene profiles on their Certificates of Analysis. Look for a section labeled Terpene Profile, Terpene Panel, or Volatile Compounds. Numbers are expressed as a percentage of total dry weight. Healthy fresh flower typically shows:
- Total terpene content: 1.5–3.5%
- Dominant terpene: 0.5–1.5% (the one driving the bulk of the strain’s smell)
- Top 3 terpenes combined: 1.0–2.5%
- Below 0.5% total: Likely stale, poorly cured, or aged past peak

1. Myrcene — the sedating one
Smell: Earthy, musky, herbal — like mango and cloves combined. Effect: Sedation, body relaxation, “couchlock.” Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in roughly 65% of commercial cannabis strains and is the main reason indica-leaning cultivars feel sedating. Common in: Mango Kush, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Dream, OG Kush, White Widow. Typical concentration in dominant strains: 0.5–1.8%.
2. Limonene — the uplifting one
Smell: Citrus peel, lemon zest, sweet orange. Effect: Mood elevation, anxiety reduction, mental clarity. Limonene-dominant strains are common picks for daytime use. Common in: Super Lemon Haze, Tangie, Wedding Cake, Do-Si-Dos, Lemon Skunk. Typical concentration: 0.3–1.5%.
3. Pinene — the alert one
Smell: Pine forest, fresh herbs, rosemary. Two isomers exist (α-pinene and β-pinene); both are listed separately on most COAs. Effect: Memory retention, alertness, counters THC-induced short-term memory effects. Common in: Jack Herer, Critical Mass, Dutch Treat, Trainwreck, Romulan. Typical concentration: 0.2–0.8%.
4. Caryophyllene — the calming one
Smell: Black pepper, woody, slightly spicy. The only terpene known to directly activate the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, which is why it shows up in research on inflammation and anxiety. Effect: Anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, mild pain modulation. Common in: Gelato, GSC (Girl Scout Cookies), Bubba Kush, Master Kush, Sour Diesel. Typical concentration: 0.3–1.2%.
5. Linalool — the relaxing one
Smell: Lavender, floral, slightly sweet. Best known as the active aroma compound in lavender essential oil. Effect: Sedation, anti-anxiety, sleep promotion. Common in: Lavender (the strain), Amnesia Haze, LA Confidential, Kosher Kush, Do-Si-Dos. Typical concentration: 0.1–0.6%.

How to read a terpene profile
Take a real lab report. Imagine you’re choosing between two strains both labeled “Wedding Cake” but from different growers:
Sample A (well-grown, well-cured): Total terpenes 2.8%, Limonene 0.84%, Caryophyllene 0.61%, Linalool 0.32%, Myrcene 0.28%, Humulene 0.19%.
Sample B (over-dried or aged): Total terpenes 0.6%, Limonene 0.21%, Caryophyllene 0.14%, Myrcene 0.09%, other trace.
Both might list 24% THC. Sample A will be noticeably more aromatic, more flavorful, and produce a more complete effect — that’s the entourage effect in action. Sample B will smell faintly like nothing and feel one-dimensional. Terpene total is the single best heuristic for actual flower quality after you’ve confirmed acceptable cannabinoid content.

The entourage effect — what science actually says
The entourage effect is the hypothesis that cannabinoids and terpenes work together to produce effects that none of them produce in isolation. The strongest evidence comes from a 2011 Russo paper in the British Journal of Pharmacology arguing that terpene profiles explain why two strains with identical THC percentages can feel completely different.
The 2024 literature has been more mixed — a controlled trial at the University of Colorado found that adding myrcene to vaporized THC did increase reported sedation, but adding limonene did not significantly increase the energizing effect over THC alone. The honest answer in 2026 is that the entourage effect is real for some terpene-cannabinoid combinations and uncertain for others. The smell and taste contribution, however, is undisputed.
Terpenes and concentrates

Different concentrate processes preserve terpenes to different degrees:
- Live resin — flash-frozen flower processed cold, preserves 80–95% of original terpene content. Total terpenes 4–10%.
- Live rosin — solventless, even higher preservation. Total terpenes 5–12%.
- Cured resin / standard BHO — moderate preservation. Total terpenes 2–5%.
- Distillate — terpenes stripped during the distillation process. Often re-introduced as botanical or cannabis-derived terpene blends.
- Hash (dry-sift / bubble hash) — high preservation if processed cold. Total terpenes 3–8%.

Common questions about cannabis terpenes
Are terpenes psychoactive?
Terpenes alone are not psychoactive in the way THC is. They modulate the effects of THC and CBD but don’t produce a “high” on their own. Some terpenes (like linalool and myrcene) do have measurable sedative effects independently — that’s why lavender oil aromatherapy works.
Can terpenes survive smoking?
Combustion destroys most terpenes — they boil off well before flower ignites (most boil at 150–220°C; combustion is 800°C+). Vaporization at 175–205°C preserves the majority of the terpene profile, which is why vaping tastes more flavor-distinct than smoking the same flower.
Are terpene-infused products the same as full-spectrum?
No. Distillate plus added terpenes recreates flavor and some of the effect modulation, but full-spectrum products retain native concentrations of minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC) as well as the original terpene ratios. Full-spectrum is more expensive but produces a more nuanced effect.
Do terpenes change as flower ages?
Yes — and quickly. Within 6 months of harvest, properly stored flower loses 20–40% of total terpene content. After 12 months, expect 50–70% loss even with vacuum-sealed mason jar storage. This is the main reason newer harvests feel “stronger” than older flower with the same THC.
How are terpenes measured on a COA?
Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is the gold standard. Some labs use GC with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), which is acceptable but less precise. Look for ISO 17025 accreditation on the lab — the bare minimum for trustworthy data.
How to store flower to preserve terpenes
Three rules:
- Glass, not plastic. Plastic leaches plasticizers into terpenes; glass is inert.
- Dark and cool. UV light and heat both break down terpenes. A cabinet at room temperature beats a windowsill. Fridge storage works but introduces moisture risk.
- Humidity-controlled. Boveda 62% packs (for joints) or 58% packs (for hash) keep terpenes intact for 6+ months. Without humidity packs, terpenes evaporate faster.
For long-term storage (6+ months), vacuum-sealed mason jars with a humidity pack in a dark cabinet preserve 70–80% of original terpene content for up to a year.
